More commonly called "Elefantino" (little elephant), the 47/32 was the most widely used anti-tank piece in Italian infantry regiments during the Second World War.
This cannon was designed to guarantee a higher firepower to the infantry: in the field it was used as an accompanying weapon, also useful for putting armored vehicles out of action. Starting from 1941, in fact, the high commands of the Italian Royal Army decided to form independent anti-tank battalions - such as the Alpine divisions, the paratroopers divisions and the motorized ones of the Bersaglieri - which had the specific objective of contrasting the enemy's armored vehicles.
The use of the “Elefantino” in the post-war period was short-lived in Italy, in the newborn Italian Army. Abroad it was employed, in 1948, in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
