Operation Husky

The infantryman of the 4th "Livorno" Infantry Division and the paratrooper of the 82nd US Airborne Division minifigures by Italianminifig are the reproductions of two of the protagonists of Operation Husky who faced each other in Sicily, in July 1943. The uniforms - full of details and 360° printed on original Lego – are the ones supplied in '43. 

“Operation Husky” is the code name for the Allied landing in Sicily. The military operation officially begins on 10 July 1943 and has, as its objective, the opening of a front in continental Europe to defeat the Kingdom of Italy and, subsequently, Nazi Germany. The operation, as a secondary result, favors the subsequent dismissal of Benito Mussolini and the signing of the Armistice of Cassabile. But the Allies initial tactical objective - to lock the Italian and German soldiers in a flanking maneuver - fails: the Nazi-fascist troops fall back in mainland Italy. 

We decided to represent the battle between the Axis forces and the Allies through the 4th "Livorno" Infantry Division and the US 82nd Airborne Division.

The Italian Division originates from the Livorno Brigade set up in 1860 and, within the framework of Operation Husky, fought valiantly in the battle of Gela, but losing many men. The 4th "Livorno" Infantry Division was disbanded after the armistice of Cassibile in September 1943. 

The 82nd US Infantry Division, formed at the beginning of the 1900s, was transformed into the first airborne division in the history of the United States Army during August 1942. Deployed in North Africa in the spring of 1943, the paratroopers of the 82nd – in particular the 504th and the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment - assault Sicily on 9 July, thus determining the beginning of the Allied invasion on Italian soil.
